Mr Ishaque is a full time Consultant Orthopaedic Spinal Surgeon at The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in Birmingham, England.
He is a recognized expert in the management of low back pain and neck pain from degenerative disc disease. His main specialist subject is the degenerate or worn out disc resulting in back and leg pain (sciatica) or neck and arm pain (brachalgia). He is a leading specialist in the non-operative and operative management of the “slipped disc, herniated disc and prolapsed disc”. He is also a recognized specialist in the management of common spinal conditions including spinal stenosis and spondylolisthesis.
He qualified BSc (First Class Honours) and MB BChir (Cantab) from Guy’s Hospital, London and Queens’ College, Cambridge in 1991. He holds Fellowships from both the Royal College of Surgeons of England and Edinburgh and the Intercollegiate Fellowship in Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery.
His higher postgraduate degree (Doctorate of Medicine, DM) in the Genetics of Disc Degeneration is from the highly prestigious Institute of Infection, Immunity and Inflammation at The University of Nottingham.
In 2005 he was awarded British Orthopaedic Association’s Sir Robert Jones Gold Medal, for his work on the Genetics of Disc Degeneration. The Robert Jones Gold Medal and Association Prize is the most prestigious and oldest accolade awarded by the BOA having been first awarded in 1924. In 2006, his work was also recognized by the Royal College of Surgeons of England, with the award of a Hunterian Professorship. Hunterian Chairs are awarded for outstanding research or for lifetime achievement, across all surgical specialties.
Mr Ishaque is one of only a handful of Orthopaedic surgeons who hold both The Robert Jones Gold Medal and a Hunterian Professorship and is possibly the youngest Orthopaedic Surgeon to have achieved this.
He was admitted onto the General Medical Council Specialist Register as a recognized Orthopaedic specialist in April 2006.
Following this, Mr Ishaque moved to Vancouver, Canada for two years for Spinal Subspecialty training on the prestigious “Combined Neurosurgical and Orthopaedic Spinal Program” at the University of British Columbia and Vancouver Hospital and Health Sciences Centre. During this time Mr Ishaque gained international expertise in the operative and non-operative management of all spinal conditions. He returned to the UK in April 2008 to take up his Consultant post at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, Birmingham.
He is actively involved in Undergraduate and Postgraduate education and is an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Birmingham. He regularly lectures on Back Pain to healthcare professionals including GP’s, Physiotherapists, Chiropractors and Osteopaths.
He consults privately at The Priory Hospital, Sutton Medical Consulting Centre, Sutton Coldfield and Heath Lodge Clinic, Knowle, Solihull.
