Your DeXA Scan

What is a DeXA scan?

A DeXA scan measures the density of bones and compares your results to a normal, known range. DeXA stands for Dual energy X-ray Absorptiometry. The machine will measure the density in the vertebrae of the lower spine and one hip, usually the least dominant side.

This test is currently the most accurate and reliable means of assessing the strength of your bones and hence your risk of fracture.

It is also used to diagnose Osteoporosis and monitor the effects of treatment.
It is a simple, painless procedure that uses very low doses of radiation.

Safety

Although the scanner uses x-ray technology, the actual radiation dose is very low, approximately the amount of radiation we receive on a daily basis. This procedure has a lower risk than plain x-ray.

If you are pregnant, or think you may be, you must inform your radiographer. X-rays may be harmful to unborn babies. The DeXA scan will not be performed if there is a risk or known pregnancy.

Preparation

You may be required to remove clothing if you have metal fastenings, zips around your waist or clothing made of thick materiel i.e. denim. You will also need to remove under wired bras and any body piercing. A gown will be supplied as well as changing facilities. You may be more comfortable if you wear light, loose clothing with NO metal.

When you arrive you will be asked to complete a lifestyle questionnaire, which the DeXA technician will go through with you prior to your scan.

You will be asked to wait in the waiting room, from where the technician will collect you.

About the scan

  • The scan is quite painless. You will not feel anything during the scan except a small vibration from the scanner, the best thing you can do is relax
  • You can eat and drink normally before and after the scan and should continue taking any medications as normal.
  • Once in the scanning room, you will then be asked to lie on your back on the couch where the technician position you and make you comfortable with pillows.
  • You will be required to lie still for approximately 2 minutes for each assessment. The measurements are made with a mechanical arm which moves slowly above the body.
  • You may feel slight couch movement during the procedure. The whole test takes 15 to 20 minutes.
  • The measurements are checked by the technician who usually remains in the room throughout the test.

After the scan

You will be free to get dressed and leave. The information obtained by the bone densitometer is processed by a computer and the results sent out to the referring clinician or your GP in 7 to 10 days.

Payment

Patients are asked to settle their account when they attend. The clinic accepts most forms of payment except American Express, but makes a small administration charge for credit card transactions.
