Risk Factors for Osteoporosis

Multiple risk factors contribute to the development of osteoporosis, some of the risk factors are:


•    Family history of osteoporosis
•    Maternal hip fracture
•    Early menopause (either natural or surgical)
•    Low trauma fracture
•    Prolonged amenorrhea > 6 months (loss of periods)
•    Long term corticosteroid use
•    Loss of height or vertebral deformity
•    Inactive lifestyle
•    Smoking
•    Excessive alcohol intake
•    Eating disorders
•    Hyperparathyroidism
•    Hypergonadism
•    Diet low in calcium (or low calcium absorption)

 
If you have any of the above conditions, you should consider having a DeXA scan.
